Locked Up
In many ways this piece is the precursor for ‘Outback Shed’ – indicating the return to the two-dimensional. The locks symbolise the increasing enclosure of ourselves within private spheres and the rejection of social exchange. Certainly something that people were forced to reflect upon in 2021. The work is the culmination of a bitter and very personal feud that Korbel experienced over a shared boundary. Frustration, anguish and despair form part of his lived experience and come to life in this piece. Critic’s note: From what initially appears as a haphazard collection of junk from a demolition site, Korbel’s careful eye has transformed into a chilling meditation on the isolating experience of suburbia.
