File System

Bits and bytes form files when arranged. Here the tools of the Industrial Revolution playfully evoke the organisation of human knowledge in the Digital Age. Korbel’s work also presents a commentary on the nature of systems, classification and organisation. The observer is encouraged to view the files as complete collection. However, there are two files which are out of place - being rasp rather than metal. However, is it the physical nature of the files or is it the classification order which is out of place? The observer is left to ponder this. Critic’s note: The weathering and decay of the files and the wooden board is a reminder of the transience of memory - even in the digital age where it feels like everything is recorded. Korbel lulls us in with familiar materials, but as usual has a deeper message.
