Garden 2

This is a rework of a previous two-dimensional piece ‘Garden’ (which was demolished to make way for Autumna Luna). It is not immediately apparent how Korbel has harnessed the extra dimension in this piece. The primary elements do not exploit the sense of space. However, on closer inspection, it is the natural element – the spider in the rear plane – that brings this piece to life. This work seeks to bring to the fore the power and industry of the natural world. The true workers of Korbel’s world are the spiders and the insects. By being exposed to the elements in an outdoor gallery, this point is reinforced by live spiders making their webs among the tools - showing that they are the true gardeners. The ‘spider’ also acts as a transition from ‘Autumna Luna’ to the ‘Garden 2’. Critic’s note: This work shows that Korbel is not afraid to critique and re-evaluate his own work, demonstrating a reflexivity and reflectiveness that has come with age. While not the most powerful piece in isolation, it comes into its own as part of the wider tableau in which it is presented.
